If you read your Boston Globe yesterday you know that the FDA has come out with new guidelines for the prescription labels that go on the drugs we purchase. If you boil down the FDA requirements, what you’ll come up with is a good set of guidelines for information tagging regarding any object or substance.
- Tell us right up front where the stuff is coming from;
- Tell us what the thing really does ;
- Make it easy for us to read;
- Give us a picture so we can make sure we’ve got the right stuff;
- Get rid of any jargon. Put in in plain terms.

Rob,
Excellent point. In a world where there is so much information to consider, the only information that people will use, will be that which successfully competes for their attention. Not only must information be easy and take less time to use, but it must also look like it will be easy and take less time to use. This, I believe, is part of literacy. Not just the mechanics of writing a coherrent paragraph, but also the skill to express ideas effectively and compellingly.
Again, great podcast!
